The Seasons of Freight

Each year is different for the trucking industry. There are good years and not so good years. Even with this in mind, there does seem to be a typical cycle that the trucking industry follows. As August approaches we are reminded that summertime is the busy time of the year for brokers.

The seasons of freight do mostly follow the weather seasons. Not to the exact dates, you may find in a Farmer’s Almanac, but trucking tends to follow the weather and the holidays.
In transportation, Spring starts around April and goes through July. This is a busy time with business picking up from the slower winter months. Construction usually increases and produce is in full swing.

Historically the busiest time of the year is from August to October. Produce and construction are still going although they are winding down. But retailers start the push to move freight between Back to School products and getting ready for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Autumn is from September to November. Things start slowing down; although there is usually still a lot of retail moving.

Then Winter hits. From December through the end of February freight levels are at their lowest. People take time off around the holidays. January typically becomes a “break” from the holiday. Combine that with bad weather and business is bound to be down.
